One might argue that street art is meant to be seen, that the very nature and central location of a wall-based mural is to have as many eyeballs upon as possible, to maximize its range and potency. Pobel, however, took the opposite approach: stenciling his art on abandoned buildings and dilapidated shacks in bumfuck nowhere, so the art becomes the photograph of the obscure locale, instead of the mural itself.

The Sun City Poms perform at the Union Hills Country Club in Sun City, Arizona. The oldest member is eighty years old, and together the dancing retirees have more than a hundred grandchildren.

The Sun City Aqua Suns, a team of synchronized swimmers aged sixty-five and older, walk the red carpet to the Lakeview pool to perform for a crowd. The leader of the team recently turned ninety.

Arlene Crary plays bingo in the Sundial Auditorium in Sun City, Arizona. In 2011, the club donated more than twenty thousand dollars to local charities from the bingo proceeds.

Last weekend, Kendrick Brinson visited Sun City, Arizona, an age-restricted community for retirees, near Phoenix. The city was built over a ghost town, in 1960, and was the first of its kind in the U.S. Brinson, who is based in Atlanta, first visited Sun City three years ago, in advance of Sun City’s fiftieth anniversary. Je suis ce gars sur tumblr depuis quelques temps maintenant. Dans son coin d’Amérique, il a créé un magazine culturel: Tepsic Magazine. Le principe du truc, c’est qu’il demande aux artistes de se prendre eux-mêmes en photos en tournée, lors d’enregistrements… Et lui publie tout ça dans son magazine papier.

Je n’ai jamais encore eu l’occasion d’avoir un exemplaire entre les mains. Mais ce que j’aime bien chez lui, c’est qu’il est parti de zéro pour monter son projet. Et quand je vois les quelques photos passer sur mon écran, je me dis qu’il s’en sort pas mal du tout. Dans l’extrait de post ci-dessous, il explique en quelques lignes les choses qu’il a jusqu’à présent appris grâce à cette expérience. Il y a toujours des choses à y pêcher.

2012 was a dope ass year for TEPSIC magazine.

my inaugural year of making TEPSIC has been the most fun and rewarding project i’ve ever worked on. 2012 has seen the birth of the idea, printing of the first two issues and a third issue already in the works.

here are some things i’ve learned along the way of building something from the ground up:

make spreadsheets, dood.

it’s something i’ve been told countless times from my parents and friends alike. i used spreadsheets for my own personal use for the business, it is stupid for me to write this down because it sounds to essential to business. use spreadsheets, collect information and use it often. keep track of your $$$.

if someone tells you “no”, find another way.

one of my main jobs is to request cameras for artists, and i usually do this via their press agent or manager. chances are, they’re going to say no because they have other things to worry about for their artist, etc. this happens all the time for me. at first i really began to get all sad and emo because some big band was “refusing” to be in my mag, then i realized i should probably keep trying until i get what i want. which i have done, time and time again. it’s almost like a game to me now.

if someone tells you print is dead, laugh in their face

i don’t have to tell you that print is indeed, NOT dead. one of the main questions i received before i even printed the first issue was, “why are you printing something when everything is digital now?” so now i just laugh because it makes me feel good in a weird way.

do not ever sell your idea for money and give up creative control

2012 also saw the first monetary offer for the TEPSIC brand, which was later declined. if someone wants to give you money for your idea that you started from the ground up, make sure you keep control of what’s yours. growing organically feels much more rewarding than getting a paycheck for not being a part of what was once yours.

i’m really looking forward to 2013, i can already sense it’s going to be a dope year !
